What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is the way in which we straighten teeth, correct bites and incorrect jaw positions using braces, plates and/or other appliances.
When is the best time to start orthodontics?
There are a number of factors which indicate the best time to start orthodontic treatment. When conducting a comprehensive dental examination, our dentists also do an orthodontic screening to see if they can foresee any orthodontic issues which may need attention now or in the future. Sometimes we may wait until your child has all their permanent adult teeth, other times it may be better to start treatment earlier if the issues are more complex.
If you’re an adult and you are concerned about the way you bite or crooked teeth, the great news is that is isn’t too late to have braces! You can benefit from braces at nearly any age. Our dentists will be happy to answer your questions on what can be done to help improve your smile.
Does my child need braces?
The main reasons for getting braces are
Cosmetic: straightening teeth and correct underbites/overbites to create a beautiful smile. This can be life changing in patients who have previously not been able to smile with confidence!
Function: improve the way the teeth fit together so that your chewing abilities are improved
Health: improve the position of your teeth so that it is easier for you to clean your teeth, thus reducing the risk of tooth decay & gum disease. Correcting any jaw discrepancies can also improve jaw joint symptoms.
How long will I need braces?
On average, a full course of braces will take 18 months to 2 years. Your dentist will be able to give a better time estimate once he/she has assessed you/your child’s individual situation.
Once the braces come off, a full set of retainers will need to be worn to prevent any relapse and help the teeth settle into their new position.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is another way of correcting tooth positions by wearing a series of clear aligners. This is fantastic for those who want to improve their smile, but are put off by the thought of having to have braces.
Stay tuned for more information as we will soon be offering Invisalign as another treatment modality!
